Research by Boston Consulting Group revealed that 28% of employees surveyed across eight countries are planning to leave their jobs. However, there are several strategies that business owners can employ to hang on to their best workers.
Offering competitive salaries makes staff feel that their hard work is valued. Employees should be able to afford to live comfortably. Wages should be regularly increased according to inflation. People promoted or given extra responsibilities should be compensated as their experience levels rise.
Many employees value flexible working with some time spent working from home, as well as flexibility in work hours such as working their normal work hours but over four days, not five.
Another key to retaining staff is to create a positive work culture. Involve staff in decision making and sharing enthusiasm for the company mission. Team building social events and facilities such as gym equipment and luxury relaxation areas can make the work environment a pleasant place to work in.
Workers need to feel they are listened to and know that their opinions matter. They should feel mentally and physically safe at work and know their contribution to the company’s success is valued.
Just as business owners benefit from business coaching, employees benefit from personal and professional coaching as well as training that develops their skills.
Cheshire Business Coaching helps many small business owners improve their business and personal life. Some of the valuable insights gained from our business coaching can be communicated to staff so that they are more committed to the business and less likely to leave.
